Mei-Hui (Wei) Chen
June 26, 1943 – June 4, 2021
Mrs. Mei-Hui (Wei) Chen, age 77, of San Diego, California passed away peacefully on Friday, June 4, 2021.
Mei-Hui is survived by husband Kung; children Robert and Melissa; and grandchildren Evan and Nicholas.
Mei-Hui was born on June 26, 1943 in Shanghai to Mr. and Mrs. Chen-Jen Wei and raised in Keelung Taiwan. She graduated from Taipei First Girl’s High School, and National Cheng Kung University in Tainan Taiwan with a degree in Industrial Engineering. She came to America to work on a master’s in Industrial Engineering at West Virginia University. There she met and married Kung Chen. They moved to Austin, Texas briefly and eventually settled in Lincoln, Nebraska. Ten years ago they moved to San Diego where she greatly enjoyed the wonderful weather, gardens and food. She found great joy there singing in the Taiwanese American Association Choir, writing short stories for their newsletter, and serving briefly as secretary.
Mei-Hui was a dedicated mom who spared no thought or expense to give her children every possible opportunity to succeed, and was very proud of their college acceptances. She was a shrewd observer of people, writing down her observations about life in America in a series of columns for Taiwanese newspapers. She also had an active imagination, writing a collection of short stories that centered on people but would sometimes go into the science fiction realm in 2 books that she wrote for a Taiwanese publisher. Later in her life she was among the top in the world in Candy Crush, being one of the few to finish the most advanced levels. Her counsel and wisdom will be sorely missed, as well as her fire for good food and movies.
