Milo Dale Flaska was born November 21, 1931, in Jennings, Kansas, to Joseph Flaska and Bessie Rezny Flaska, the youngest of six children. He was raised in Kansas, and graduated Decatur Community High School. At age 13, Milo started working in a Pepsi plant to help his mother pay her household bills. The crates probably weighed almost as much as he did.
Milo attended the University of Colorado, Boulder, and graduated in 1958 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He worked his way through college as a hod-carrier and taught himself to lay brick in his sister's garage using a sand mixture instead of mortar so he could use the bricks over and over again. He became a bricklayer and was proud of the various buildings he worked on in Denver. Milo's first assignment upon graduation was with NSA at Ft. Meade, MD and he attended the University of Maryland for post graduate work.
It was in Washington, DC that Milo met his wife, Norma Schneider Clevenger, and they were married on Jan. 30,1960 in the Unitarian Church. A year later, Milo moved the family to Salt Lake City where he worked for Sperry Rand on missile systems. His final move West was to San Diego to work at the Naval Electronics Laboratory, later called the Naval Oceans System Center, in 1963 to design sonar tracking systems for submarines. He retired after 31 years of Navy and government service in October 1990. Milo returned to his rural roots and bought an avocado grove in Valley Center where he worked long hours -- and fretted about the cost of water!
Milo was a jack-of-all-trades and master of them all. There was no job he wouldn't tackle - building block walls, wrought iron fences, decks, tiling patios - and that was just outdoors! He included his children in most of his projects and taught them with great patience. He was very proud of his children and their accomplishments. He spent many hours coaching them in sports and many more hours warming the benches at baseball, football and softball games.
Milo was kind, caring and generous. He was the first one to offer to help. He assisted his mother and sisters when they needed him; it was what a good son and brother did. He hoped to instill those values in his children - and he succeeded.
Milo was also inquisitive and adventurous. He loved the outdoors, camping and fishing. He looked forward to another camper trip to Alaska and a trip to the East Coast - Maine to the Keys - because he had never seen that part of the country. And there are boxes filled with travel brochures of Europe and Australia and New Zealand. Those were his dreams -- he just ran out of time.
On October 4, 2022, we lost a good man. He died peacefully at home surrounded by his family. Rest in Peace.
