Neoma Ruth Fulton, 86, was born in her parents’ home November 28, 1938 in Chickasha, Oklahoma- a town only those who have lived there know how to correctly pronounce. She is preceded in death by a son, Louis, her parents, Robert and Ruby Fulton, and two brothers, Robert and Kenneth. Her father owned the local auto dealership, Fulton Motor Company. He was well respected, honest and generous, even allowing out of town customers to spend the night, if needed. Neoma embodied these traits she admired in her father, and also had his wonderful sense of humor. The gift of a new car was to be hers upon graduating high school, but she traded in the offer for the chance to attend Colorado Women's College. She always aspired to broaden her horizon and views. After graduating college, she went to work for TWA as a flight attendant to travel and experience more of the United States. Neoma was an avid reader, seeker of knowledge, highly inquisitive and adventurous.
In her 40’s, after raising three sons in San Diego, she was awarded a Master’s degree from San Diego State University. She pursued counseling and social work, retiring after several years of working for San Diego County protecting young children and vulnerable people in her community. It was a difficult, yet rewarding career. She recognized, and was proud of, the difference she made in the lives she supported.
Neoma lived her life intentionally, putting her whole heart into everything she did. She reminded us to do our best with the talents God had given us and that we could do hard things because, after all, we are strong like our coffee. Her variety of interests and loyal personality cultivated lifelong friendships. She enjoyed the theatre, skiing, nature, old movies, long walks with friends and playing her Baby Grand piano. She had a song for literally every occasion, complete with a little dance and her signature smile.
A lifetime of memorable trips were logged, as adventure was highly regarded. She traveled throughout the U.S. and Europe, often speaking fondly of her time spent in Southern Italy. She was planning trips until her last breath, most recently dreaming of a train trip across Canada. She visualized absolutely everything, treasuring the memories she vividly pictured in her mind while planning the future she could so clearly see. Life was to be celebrated and she did so in the most beautiful ways, always inspiring and encouraging those around her.
As she aged, she kept hold of habits from her younger years, such as wearing driving gloves, big sunglasses and her signature hats. She was never without a power snack and water bottle, even if just to hold it. New devices were of interest to her, but the latest technology was often a bit of a challenge. Not to worry, if she forgot a password or launched the wrong application, she laughed and phoned a friend on speed dial. Neoma was known to “get the giggles” and will always be remembered for her infectious laugh. On February 3rd, 2025, her death left an irreplaceable void in our lives, yet her beautiful legacy will live on in our hearts forever. She is survived by her brother Raymond, sons, Richard and Edward, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
