20 OCTOBER 1944 – 16 MARCH 2025
Randall Earl Miller was born on October 20th, 1944, in Columbus, Ohio, to parents Donald Miller and Marianne Benson. Don later married Betty Colley, and the family moved to San Diego in 1954, where they lived in Ocean Beach for the rest of their lives.
In 1964, Randy joined the Army and served in the 8th Special Forces, stationed at Fort Gulick, Panama. He often shared fond memories of his time as a Green Beret, including parachuting from airplanes and SCUBA training, where he was ranked number one in his class.
On December 19th, 1965, Randy married Renae Kyes, and they soon welcomed their beloved children, Todd and Lori. Randy was a devoted father who instilled in his children a love for the outdoors, including hunting, fishing, and camping. In 1971, Randy graduated from SDSU with a degree in mechanical engineering. He began working at the Naval Electronics Laboratory Center in Point Loma, where he eventually became the head of the Prototype Engineering Division. He retired in 1998 from the same position.
In 1991, Randy married the love of his life, Sharon Gilcrest. Sharon and Randy spent thirty-three happy years together. Their primary passion was SCUBA diving, but they also enjoyed training and hunting with their Vizslas, exploring the California wine country, and spending quality time with their many friends. Randy and Sharon fulfilled a dream by living in Wyoming from 2016 to 2023, but Ocean Beach remained their true home.
Randy is survived by his wife, Sharon; son Todd, his wife Jennifer, and their children Jacob and Alexis; daughter Lori, her husband Robert, and children Ryan, Michael, and Davis; and Sharon’s daughter Annalisa, her husband Dana, and their son Jack. He is also survived by his siblings Julie and Barclay Miller, and Melanie, Deborah, Lisa, and Neko Fallon. Randy was preceded in death by his brother, Daniel.
A viewing will be held at Beardsley-Mitchell Funeral Home in Ocean Beach on Thursday, March 27th, from 1:00 to 5:00 pm. A burial service will take place at Miramar National Cemetery on Friday, March 28th, at 1:15 pm, followed by a reception at the Miller home.
Randy was beloved by his wife, family, and friends, and he will be dearly missed.
