March 11, 1953 – March 22, 2025
Forever In Our Hearts
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Rey Flores Whitney, who departed peacefully on March 22, 2025, at the age of 72. Born on March 11, 1953, in the Philippines. Rey immigrated to the United States in 1972 at the age of 19, alongside his mother and stepfather, in pursuit of greater opportunity and a better life.
He was the beloved son of Milagrosa Flores and Angelito Oliveros, and stepson of Kenneth Whitney. One of thirteen children, he is fondly remembered by his siblings Rene, Ramon, Rosario, Raquel, Marigrace, Sonny, Rodrigo, Reggie, Jeffrey, Randy, Michelle, and Michael.
Rey was a devoted father and grandfather. He leaves behind his children Melissa, Leslie, Oliver, and Jennifer, and his beloved grandchildren Madilyn, Roman, Lilly, and Emma. Following the untimely passing of his mother in 1975, Rey took on a caring and guiding role in the lives of his younger siblings—a reflection of the deep sense of responsibility and compassion he carried throughout his life.
He lived a life defined by humility, hard work, and quiet strength. Prior to immigrating, he served in the traffic division of the Olongapo Police Department in the late 1960s. After settling in the U.S., he worked as a lead in the inventory warehouse at Lucky Automotive from 1976 to 1986, and later as a journeyman in the printing room at the San Diego Union-Tribune from 1986 until his retirement in 2009.
In retirement, Rey found a new passion in cycling. What began at age 63 with his first race, “Bike the Bay” in August 2016, soon blossomed into a beloved part of his life. He completed his final race, the “Tour de Foothills,” in November 2024. Over the years, he proudly logged more than 90,000 miles and was a cherished member of four cycling teams: 619 Barkada, Adobo Velo, PRT, and Piyon.
Rey will be remembered for his quiet resilience, unwavering love for his family, and the joy he found on the open road. His legacy of kindness, dedication, and gentle strength lives on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
