Robert Lewis, Jr., age 85, passed away on Sunday, February 4, 2024, surrounded by loved ones. Born on March 23, 1938, in Paducah, Kentucky, Robert was a venerable patriarch and unsung hero. The cherished son of Annie Mae and Robert Lewis Sr., he was a brother to eight siblings.
Robert experienced humble beginnings, including food insecurity and the absence of a father figure after his father tragically died in a car accident when he was 14 years old. This hardship instilled in him a drive to provide for his mother, leading him to enlist in the Navy. He served with honor and distinction until his retirement as a Senior Chief Petty Officer, Rank E9, in 1974.
In 1960, Robert met Shirley Mae Cuffee. They married on June 25, 1961, and welcomed two children, Terri and Othello. They later adopted Shirley's daughter, Kim. Despite their eventual divorce, they remained lifelong friends. Shirley was a steadfast presence in Robert's life, accompanying him to appointments and holding his hand as he drew his last breath.
Not one to rest on his laurels, Robert seized the opportunity offered by the GI Bill to further his education. He attended college and earned his associate's degree in Business Administration, exemplifying his commitment to lifelong learning.
Following his academic achievements, Robert embarked on a rewarding career in Civil Service. His tenure, marked by dedication and integrity, culminated in a well-deserved retirement after several years of commendable service.
A man of immense personality and a force of nature, Robert was a bastion of strength. His stoicism was a testament to his era. While he may not have often voiced his love verbally, his actions spoke volumes. He worked tirelessly to ensure his family never wanted for anything.
In his younger years, Robert was passionate about working on cars and building computers. In his later years, he cherished spending time with his family.
Robert leaves behind a legacy of hard work and determination to be carried forward by his three children, Kim Ayala, Terri Lewis-Lundberg, and Othello Lewis. His spirit lives on in his nine grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and his four remaining sisters, Betty Sanders, Meddie Green, Della Barr, and Linda Sheppard. Though he is no longer with us physically, his influence continues to resonate in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him.
A graveside service for Robert will be held Thursday, February 15, 2024 at 1:15 PM at Miramar National Cemetery, 5795 Nobel Drive, San Diego, CA 92122.
