Robert A. Lynch passed away in San Diego on August 23, 2013, at the age of 85. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jeanne Kipp. Other survivors are son, Timothy, daughter Kathleen Tillery (Kenneth) and grandsons Kristopher Tillery and Diego Lynch.
Bob was born in Brooklyn, NY where his career navy father was stationed. In 1938, the family was transferred to San Diego. He graduated from San Diego High, San Diego State and USC in mechanical engineering.
Growing up in Mission Hills, he became an Eagle Scout in Troop 26. At 17 with special help from his father, Bob entered the Navy in the Eddy Program, the beginning of Navy Electronics.
Bob’s first employer was General Dynamics and he remained there for 37 years, where he is remembered as the Father of the Tomahawk Cruise Missile.
Bob learned to sail as a child at Coronado Yacht Club and enjoyed the sport his whole life. A long time member of Mission Bay Yacht Club, in 1970, Bob was Commodore. In recent years, as an active member of San Diego Yacht Club, his red tugboat was easily recognized on the Bay. Ashore he loved to make models of projects to which he had contributed his design ideas. Worldwide chartering of sailboats and cruising in small ships fulfilled his desire to travel.
Many friends will remember Bob’s quick wit and encyclopedic knowledge of things maritime and aviation. His ashes will be scattered at sea from the deck of the READY.
