

He proudly served in the United States Navy for 27 years as a Construction Mechanic as part of the world famous Seabees. He also gladly served 30 years within the United States Postal Service as a service mechanic and technician. Rudy was born on August 18, 1946 in Olongapo, Philippines to Julia and Eutequio Abitria. After the passing of his father, Rodolfo, his mother Julia and siblings moved to Panan, Botolan, Zambalez (his mother’s hometown). Exceptionally smart, Rudy graduated with honors from Panan Elementary School in Botolan, Zambalez. He spent his highschool years in Donsol, Sorsogon Highschool, in Bicol Province graduating with honors as the valedictorian. He attended college at the Philippine College of Commerce for 2 years. In April of 1968, Rodolfo passed the multi-aptitude test required to join the United States Navy. That changed his life forever. Enlisting in the US Navy was an opportunity that he embraced with enthusiasm and dedication. He was first assigned to Supreme Allied Command in Norfolk, VA. From there he transitioned to the Construction Mechanic (CM) in Port Hueneme, CA as part of the Seebees which allowed him to perform work that he loved – working on equipment, machines and working with his hands. He honorably served for 27 years and his duty stations included Japan, Costa Rica and the former U.S.S.R. He was stationed at Washington DC providing him the opportunity to travel the world. He officially retired in April 1994 from his last duty station in Adak, Alaska. During his time in the Naval service, he managed to complete courses that allowed him to earn his Associates Degree in Automotive Technology.
Following his career in the Naval Service, Rodolfo began a new career of service with the USPS. This work allowed him to continue his passion as a mechanic while now being home to spend more time with his family. The USPS co-workers also became a second family to Rudy and he deeply enjoyed his time with his co-workers.
Rudy was a truly dedicated husband and father who always sacrificed to provide the best for his family. He married Virginia Delfin in August 1974and a few short years later Cheryl was born followed by Richard two years after that.
He possessed a quiet dignity and an insatiable desire for learning and education. He bestowed many lesson upon his children regarding the importance of hard work, education and Faith. He also had a jovial demeanor and quick wit, and he regarded his time spent with close family and friends as his favorite moments. It was often easy to find him at a family party as he had a beaming smile and boisterous laugh. Above all else, he put his family first. He was a patient and often doting husband to Virginia. With his children he never spared his affection and praise but was quick to teach and correct when needed. Without doubt his greatest joy in life was having his home filled with his wife, children and grand-children.
He is survived by his devoted wife Virginia; his daughter Cheryl, son-in-law Corey, his son Richard and daughter-in-law Janet; his grandchildren Cody, Corey Jr., Reina, Ronin, Rhiannon, Rory Jo and Rixon; and his great grand-children Connor and Cali-lynn
A viewing will take place at El Camino Mortuary in San Diego on Thursday February 25 from 12:00pm-4:00pm. A funeral Mass will be held the following day at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parrish on Friday February 26 from 11:00am-12:00pm with the burial service immediately following at the Miramar National Cemetery at 1:00pm. The service will be officiated by Father Ignatius.
