SHEPHERD-VALLIN, RUTH Ruth Shepherd-Vallin born August 16, 1906, died August 6, 2012, at peace in her bed. Ruth was born in 1906 and moved to Ocean Beach, California at the age six. She began life living in a tent house and staying warm with a wood burning stove. She survived many hardships in her life to become one of the most amazing women that time has known. She attended Ocean Beach Elementary in which her intelligence was first realized as she was advanced eight grade levels. She then attended San Diego High School and graduated in 1925. Ruth went on to start her working career as a secretary for Cal Pac and was quickly promoted to an accountant position. She was married to Albert Vallin in 1934, and in 1941 they took a gamble and invested in their first of many properties. This first property became the home in which she would spend the rest of her life. Together they watched and helped build San Diego and Ocean Beach into the great cities they are today. After years of hard work and good investments they were able to retire in 1972. In 1997 Ruth's husband Al passed on leaving Ruth to oversee their large family. Here in the year 2012, we are saddened to see Ruth pass on at the age 105. She had an amazing life that included many experiences. She was born in the Progressive Era, survived the Great War, lived through the Jazz Age, made it through the Depression, watched as World War II changed the world, and brought in the Modern Era. She watched the world take flight, watched the birth of the modern automobile, and watched the landing on the Moon. She experienced this great country grow, and lived in harmony with those around her for over a century.
