A couple of months ago, I received an unexpected phone call from jiujiu, Uncle Shane. He was trying to contact my parents, his sister and brother in law. Luckily for me, we talked for an hour catching up about how he was enjoying his retirement community, pandemic challenges, and the weekend away visits he looked forward to with cousin Tina's family. Little did I know, that would be my last conversation with jiujiu. Whether it was on the phone or during visits to San Diego, he was always so warmhearted, hospitable, and easy to talk to about anything. Jiujiu always had a fun story to share and his mannerisms often reminded me of my beloved grandpa. My mother also admired her older brother and would often ask him for advice and jiujiu's wise words were always taken to heart. She told me stories of how they would be partners and win dance competitions in their youth and her disappointment that they did not live closer when they settled in San Diego instead of Houston in the '70s. Though we were not physically close, he will and forevermore hold a dear place close in our hearts.

My Dearest Shane,

Your sudden departure left me with a broken heart. We met in college as classmates and got married. Over the last six decades, we reared our children and went through a lot of ups and downs together. Your care and love for me will sustain me for the rest of my life. Your empathy and filial piety will serve as a model for our children.

We moved to San Diego in 1978, you have made many good friends since then. You treated your friends with sincerity, honesty and enthusiasm. You took great joy and comfort in helping people and you earned the respect and love by many. This gave meaning to your life in the last forty years. I will spend the rest of my life in the comfort of our fond memories. And one day, I will join you in heaven.

(Part 3)
6. He taught us courage -- courage to be different and not to be afraid to challenge authority when appropriate and necessary. Those who knew him well, knew that he could be mischievous and had a strong sense of justice. He challenged authority when he felt things weren’t fair. And, he would defend those who were being oppressed or disadvantaged by authority – whether it was helping 張媽媽 with her parking ticket or 彭叔叔with a big lawsuit, he was there to defend his friends.
7. Finally, he taught us to be courageous with our hearts – to not be afraid to open our hearts and to put our hearts into everything we do and into the relationships and the people around us. Dad had the biggest heart.

So, it is with a heart very, very full of love, remembrance and respect, that I honor my dad today. Dad, thank you for everything.... You have been a true blessing in our lives. You continue to inspire me in so many ways and will always be part of me and in my heart.

And, our most heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all you for being here today to celebrate the life of our Dad, Shane Chang, 張大哥, 張鶴湘. Thank you!
