December, 1923 - September, 2015 Shirley Isabella Johnson of San Diego passed away Sep 21, 2015 at age 91. Born in Chicago, she spent her youth in the mid-west. During WWII, Shirley wanted to become a Nurse, but her father dissuaded her for fear she would be called overseas. She moved to San Diego at the behest of her sister Mary Ruth, who obtained a teaching job in 1953 and remarked how much grander the climate and weather was compared to harsh winters in Illinois and Wisconsin. She secured a USG Civil Service job as a Clerk, Secretary, and Stenographer, where airplanes on approach to the airport would fly right by her office window. Shirley enjoyed San Diego for its sea, mountains, mesas, canyons, and coastal climate. She lived in North Clairemont for 54 years. She was a Founding Member of Our Mother of Confidence Catholic Church. In her youth, Shirley was very attractive and could pass for a Beauty Queen or Hollywood Star. She was engaged to be married on 3 occasions, but never sealed the deal - those men had issues! Shirley’s interests included poetry and a lifelong devotion to animal causes – supporting numerous animal charities. She cared for at least 18 dogs and many cats (she accepted their issues!) throughout her life. She also enjoyed traveling with her sister, Mary Ruth Johanson, brother-in-law, Roy Johanson, and niece, Della Newman (Johanson), who all pre-deceased her. Shirley is survived by her nephew-in-law, Jeff Newman; great nephew, David Newman; niece-in-law, Janet Johanson, and 2nd Cousin, Marilyn Piraino. Services: Viewing at 10am & Funeral Mass at 11am on Mon, 28 Sep at Our Mother of Confidence, 3131 Governor Dr, San Diego, CA 92122. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her name to the church.
