Retired San Diego Police Detective II Steven C. Chelby “Steve” was born on December 26th, 1942 in Chicago, Ill. Raised in Chicago, Steve joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served tours in the Philippines and Japan. Upon returning, Steve returned to Chicago to raise a family and serve his community in law enforcement.
Steve was married to his beautiful wife Amparo in 1964. Steve absolutely adored Amparo and would often state that it was his greatest accomplishment and his life’s purpose to be her husband. In 1977 Steve accepted a position with San Diego Police Department where he would go on to serve 20 more years attainting the rank of Detective II. In total, Detective II Steve Chelby proudly served his country and community for 35 successful years before retiring in 1998. Steve and Amparo raised two sons, Thomas and Edward and were married for over 56 years. Steve was an accomplished competitive marksman, loved motorcycles, reading, and cheering on the San Diego Padres.
Steve sadly passed away on July 19, 2021. He is preceded in death by his father Donald and his mother Lillian, his brother Johnny, and great-grandson Logan. Steve is survived by his wife Amparo, sisters Villia Kviz and Janine Dluzen, sons and their spouses Thomas and Tabbetha Chelby and Edward and Jaye Chelby, Grandchildren: and their spouses Eddie and Christina Chelby, Christopher and Melissa Scruggs, Melissa and Nick Sohler, and Jerid Chelby, Great-grandchildren: Aaron, Anyssa, Alondra, Alexander, Liam, Lainey, Vivian, Olive, Bishop, Wynona, and expected great-grandchild, Great-Great granddaughter Kennedy, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Steve will be greatly missed by all of his friends and family. His quick wittedness, educational talks with his grand-children, and corny dad jokes, will be missed most of all.
There will be a Celebration of Life for Steve on Wednesday, 28 July at 2:15pm at El Camino Memorial Chapel.
