On January 31, 2023, Susan Sadie Misleh, age 86, was called home by the Lord. Susan passed peacefully and mercifully, a blessing granted, to join her deceased husband, Fuad, her mother and father, Ann and Louis Kawood, her brother, Norman, and her grandsons, Thomas Misleh, and Kevin Ajluni.
She was surrounded by her children, Linda, Judy, Anton, and James, and her extended Misleh and Kawood families. Susan is survived by her children, her 11 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and one on the way. She is also survived by her sister, Jaqueline, and her brother, Richard, and their families.
Susan will be remembered for her gentle and kind heart, her unconditional constant love and support, her graciousness and elegance, and her wisdom and common sense.
Born June 1, 1936 in Vermont, her family later moved to New Haven, Connecticut and was where she would grow up, attend school, work for a prestigious wedding gown designer at first as a worker bee and then as a wedding gown model.
She met Fuad Anton Misleh in Hempstead, New York, and married on May 20th, 1956. Fuad and Susan moved to Washington D.C. into an apartment. Her first child, Linda, was born. She got the job as secretary to then Senator John F. Kennedy, and assisted and did secretarial work for General McNamara.
Soon after, Fuad and Susan bought their first home in Arlington, Virginia. Daughter, Linda, and Judy, and son, Anton, were born in Washington D.C. in 1958, 60, and 62. In 1963, the family moved to San Francisco, California. Fuad and his brother, Nadim, opened a grocery store on the corner of Haight and Ashbury. Susan would make a traditional Palestinian dinner, package it up, and with her four children, James was born in 1964 in San Francisco, Susan would go by streetcar so that she and her children could have Sunday dinner with our dad. We sat on milk crates over a makeshift table. Hauling four small children, dinner, onto a streetcar so that her family could have Sunday dinner with their father is one example of her love and true devotion and selflessness.
In 1968, the family moved to San Diego. Susan learned to drive. She was active in her church of which she and my dad, along with other devoted uncles and aunts in our community founded St. George Antioch Orthodox Church.
Susan will be remembered as a devoted mother and wife, always putting her family first, and as a loving, kind, and gentle grandmother. She had many friends who’d describe her as their best friend, always nice, kind, sweet, classic, and elegant, always supportive, never an unkind word. A good woman. A good friend. The epitome of Lady. She will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed. She was my and my sister and brothers’ best friend. We will miss you, Mommy
