THOMAS EARL MASSEY III

June 13, 1945December 17, 2018

Thomas Earl Massey, III, passed away Monday, December 17, 2018, in San Diego, California at Sharp Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Mr. Massey was born June 13, 1945 in Washington, DC, to Thomas Earl Massey, Jr. of Morrilton, AR, and Eva Catherine Williams Massey of Washington, DC.

Tom grew up in Morrilton, AR, and attended the University of Arkansas where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He began his career in sales and marketing at American Airlines, but spent the majority of his career in media and advertising sales, working for the CBS affiliates in Seattle and San Diego as well as the NBC affiliate in San Diego. A passionate golfer all his life, he was a member of The Century Club in San Diego, the non-profit organization that operates San Diego’s PGA tour event, and eventually became the director of sales. Tom also did work for the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines and the San Diego Chargers.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter Merryn Nicole Massey in 1991 and a beloved son, Braden Thomas Massey of San Diego, in 2015. He is survived by a son, Turner Williams Massey, of Dallas, TX; a sister, Kaye Massey Bass of Richmond, VA; his former wife, Sharon Reddick Massey of San Diego, CA; and nieces Lauren Bass Elam of West Palm Beach, FL, Janie Bass Muñoz of Richmond, VA, and nephews, Ryan Thomas Bass of Salisbury, MD, and John Dosson Bass of Fayetteville, AR.

When his boys were growing up, Tom was very involved with Solana Beach Little League, coaching for a number of years and active on the board of directors. He was a long time member of Lomas Santa Fe Country Club as well as the San Diego Advertising Golf Association. He loved his time on the golf course and watching sports of all kinds, particularly when his sons were involved. Tom was known by his friends for his humor and quick wit and outgoing and affectionate nature. He would want to acknowledge his many long time friends for their friendship and support, including Ron Justiss, Jim Ferguson, and Bobby Sexton.

A memorial service will be held at Solana Beach Presbyterian Church in Solana Beach, CA, in early January.

In addition to interacting with Tom in the hallways of Channel 8, my fondest memories of him came during the San Diego Advertising Golf Association annual events in Palm Springs. If he was on the same team, you always had a chance to win; if he was an opponent, just hand him the money and head for the bar. He was one of the funniest men I've ever known. I'm devastated for Sharon and the rest of the family.

The only time my dad (Jim Huett) won the Morrilton Golf Club 4th of July golf tournament his partner was Thomas Earl Massey Jr. The Massey family was so respected and admired in our small town. As a young boy growing up, I wanted to be Tom III and thought Kaye was the perfect girl next door. I miss so much about that time and am saddened that one of my idols is now gone. Take comfort in a life well lived and a legacy that will last forever.
