

Mr. Virgil Herbert Marcum, age 89 of San Diego, California went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, October 25, 2018. He was born on August 29, 1929 in Lynnville, Iowa to Harrison Howard and Bonnie Alice (Hurt) Marcum of Kentucky. He was married to Yu Ai “Aiko” (nee Chang) in 1962 in Taipei, Taiwan. They were married for 56 years. Virgil enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1948 serving honorably as a Seabee (Utilities) for 21 years. His tours of duty included San Diego, Guam, Adak, Midway Island, Philippines, Okinawa, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Port Hueneme. After retiring from the U.S. Navy, Virgil worked as a Facilities Maintenance Manager for the Navy Exchange retiring after 21 years in 1990. Virgil and Aiko have lived in San Diego since 1975.
Virgil will be remembered as a devoted son, husband, brother, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He faithfully served as a Sunday School teacher for many years at First Baptist Church of Mira Mesa. He attended GC2 Church for the last several years, where he was known as Grandpa Virgil by all the kids who came to him for candy and stickers.
Survived by wife Yu Ai Marcum; sons Ming Marcum (Marsha Isenhower), Joseph Marcum (Jackie); daughters Iona Padron (Roberto), Irene Morris (Glen); grandchildren Jennifer Leary, Timothy, Jeremiah, and Joshua Marcum, Noah and Charisa Morris, Adrian, Jessica, Robert, Charles, and Michael Padron, Susana Aquilino; great grandchildren Paige and Sam Leary, Abigail and E. Virgileen Aquilino, Bennet, Ellen, Isabella, Sawyer, and Emmett Padron; brother James Marcum; sisters Inis Pugh, Anna May McBride; and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by parents, brothers, sisters, and grandson Sergio Padron.
Viewing for Virgil Marcum will be on Thursday, November 15, 2018 from 4 to 8 PM at El Camino Memorial (5600 Carroll Canyon Road, San Diego, CA 92121) and a celebration of life service will be held at 12:00 PM on Friday, November 16th at Summit Point Church (10770 Rickert Rd, San Diego, CA 92126). He will be laid to rest on Friday November 16th at 9 AM at Miramar National Cemetery (burial services will be for family and close friends).
