Siony was born on July 2, 1931, in Calasiao, Pangasinan, Philippines, to the late Hilario and Romana Calaunan. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, Dionicio Bona Bustria, and her brothers Juan, Luis, and Basilio Calaunan.
In 1955, Siony immigrated to the United States to join Dionicio, a U.S. Navy sailor stationed in Florida. Their family grew during military assignments in Newport, Rhode Island, where their son Eugene was born; Philadelphia, where their daughter Marjorie was born; and San Diego, California, where their youngest son, Dionisio “Dean,” was born. The family later returned to the Philippines, settling in Subic during Dionicio’s final tour of duty, and later retired in Baguio City, Benguet.
Following Dionicio’s passing in 2013, Siony returned to San Diego to live with her son Dean and his family.
Siony was a devout Catholic and active in her charismatic prayer group in Baguio. She cherished time with her lifelong friends and was a loving and devoted grandmother. She often flew to California to spend time with her newborn grandchildren, treasuring those early bonding moments before returning to the Philippines.
She is survived by her three children and their spouses, 12 grandchildren, three granddaughters-in-law, two great-grandchildren, her sister Betty Calaunan Valdez, and many nieces and nephews in the Philippines.
Siony will live on in the hearts and memories of all who knew and loved her. She will be deeply missed.
“Wherever a beautiful soul has been, there is a trail of beautiful memories.”
