

Herb was born at Fort Sam Houston, Texas where his father was stationed in the Army Air Corp. He attended over 14 schools due to his father’s career in the AirForce. Herb graduated from Yale University in 1952, Cornell Medical School in 1956. He completed his Psychiatric residency in Syracuse in 1960 and became Board certified in 1969. He went on active duty with the AirForce accepting an assignment in Wiesbaden Germany from 1960 to 1964. From 1964 to 1966 he was stationed at March Air Force Base in Riverside. Herb joined the San Diego County Mental Health service in 1966 eventually becoming head of Adult Mental Health Services. He retired in 1986.
Survivors include his wife, Sandy who he met in 1950. They were married 69 years. His children are Margi (DeForest), Ren (Shelly), Jerry (Virginia) Brian (Katrina) and Steven (Michelle). The seven grandchildren Jessica (Mike), Katie (Eric), Anna, (Evan), Kyle, Justine (Keith), Ben and Mia. The six great grandchildren are Madison, Nolan, David, Janet, Warren and Maxwell. The Family was the most important part of his life. He enjoyed watching them all grow and mature learning from his example.He also leaves his sister, Penny, her two daughters, their families and several nieces and nephews.
Throughout his life Herb sang with many choruses and was a member of the Yale Glee club. He and Sandy traveled to over 80 countries experiencing many exotic places. Herb became the Scoutmaster for Troop 585, the boy’s troop. For 6 years he and Sandy led a group of scouts on treks over the trails of the Sierras climbing Mt Whitney twice. They hiked and rafted the Grand Canyon several times. He dabbled in ceramics, enjoyed gardening, scuba diving, tennis a bit of cooking and stitched 19 “pictures” made entirely of beads. Many were of his own design which won many awards at the San Diego County Fair.
His last two and half years were spent battling bone marrow cancer. When the chemotherapy did not work any longer, he was given weekly transfusions until the disease overwhelmed him.
