Wu-YI So passed away peacefully at her home in San Diego, California on March 17, 2020. She recently turned 100 in December of 2019. She was born in Taiyuan, Shanxi province, Northern China, the youngest of 5 children. Her parents were originally from South China and subsequently returned to Guangzhou in Guangdong Province where her father served as a magistrate. Wu-Yi received her B.A. from Lingnan University and received two Masters degrees, one from the University of Texas (English Department), and the other from the University of Chicago (School of Social Service Administration). She earned her PhD from, and while teaching at, Michigan State University, where for many years she taught English as a Second Language at MSU’s English Language Center. “Bridging the Gap” was her best known publication, which she lovingly authored to help many of her international students learn English. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Kwan-Wai-So and is survived by her three sons: Kenneth (Kate); Kester (Cheryl) and Kermit (Patty) and her wonderful grandchildren. The family is having a private service and a celebration of life is planned for later this year. In Wu-Yi’s honor, the family is setting up an endowment fund in the English Department at Michigan State University—details will follow.
