

Anna was born Doo Wai Ngoi on December 9, 1918 in Shanghai, China. She was the third oldest in a family of 7, including her parents. After she finished high school, her family sent her to the International School for Girls to continue her education. During that time her father worked as a banker and held the position as the president of the bank to support the family. In her twenties, she worked for the American cosmetic giant Max Factor in Shanghai as a Max Factor representative. As a Max Factor Rep, She introduced Chinese women to the magic of make-up and cosmetic enhancements and how to highlight their images and appearances through cosmetic . During that time she was also very interested in the movies, theaters and the very latest in music, such as the latest popular songs of the time. She also loved to dance, especially the new steps after the Second World War. The family lived in Shanghai for about 30 some odd years before they moved to Hong Kong in 1940s. While in Hong Kong, she worked for a radio station to support the family.
In 1953 she met Frank Yick through mutual friends in Hong Kong and married Frank shortly. Around 1954 or thereafter she moved to San Francisco and settled down with Frank in their present day home on Jackson Street in San Francisco. Anna told everyone that when she married Frank it came with an instant family for she became the stepmother of 4 sons and one daughter. They were Robert, Leroy, Arthur, Albert and Mabel. In the 1960's, Anna worked for a computer information processing company utilizing her English language skill and her past work experience in other fields. Besides devoting the bulk of her time taking care of her husband, she also managed to have a successful career in the computer information processing field until she retired. After her retirement, she also found new interest in cooking, gardening and shopping for bargains. Anna just couldn't resist a bargain. She had always been a frugal person due to her background and also because of her upbringing.
Anna was also a very caring and giving person. Whenever she saw her friends in trouble or in need, she would volunteer to offer any assistance she could. Anna was also an interpreter for Chinese immigrants coming to the United States. Many of the friends she had helped have become her lifelong friends.
Anna was very active physically and living in San Francisco, the only method for her to get around was the public transportation. For Anna, public transportation meant that she had to do a lot of walking in her daily commute to work, shopping for groceries and to visit her friends. Anna attributed this daily physical exercise for her good health that carried her through the later years of her life. She discovered that she had Lymphoma around 2010 and she followed through the doctor's recommended treatment. The cancer came back in the later part of 2012 and Anna eventually succumbed to the disease this last week.
Throughout Anna's life, she loved and care about everyone around her and in return she was supported and loved by everyone around her. During her life in the State, she was cared for and loved by her late husband, the Yick's family and also was loved by her sister Grace, her family, Brother Eddie and his wife, and her circle of close friends.
