Carl James, retired US Navy Commander, real estate developer, and former West Coast manager for Herman Miller Furniture sales for over 35 years passed away Thursday May 2nd. He was born in Elk City, Kansas, officially on November 5th, 1922, although his mother always maintained it was the 6th, telling him "she should know, as she was there." He graduated from both Kansas University and the Art Institute of Chicago. After traveling for a few years, he eventually came to San Francisco in the 1950's where he was to make his home. In 1953, in fulfillment of a promise, he acquired his first piece of real estate in San Francisco. He really loved this property as can be attested to by the fact that he still owns it today. Carl was the youngest of seven children of Carl and Pearl James. He was the only child to go to college and leave Kansas, although he returned home often to visit with his siblings and parents. He is survived by three nieces, all located in Kansas. Carl enjoyed traveling, collecting coins and reading. Those who knew him will miss him. Service planned for a later date.
