Dilip R. Tamhane was born on October 14, 1942 in Indore, India. He was the eldest son of Sulabha and Ramakant Tamhane. Dilip spent his childhood and early adult years living in Delhi. He loved India but was always fond of western culture. After earning a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Dilip moved to the United States to pursue a Masters in Industrial Engineering at Illinois Institute of Technology. In 1965, Dilip returned to India and met his wife Anjali, who he remained married to for 48 years. They moved to Chicago in 1972 after Dilip received an employment offer from the paint manufacturing company Sherwin Williams. Through his work with Sherwin Williams, Dilip and his family lived in multiple states around the U.S. including Illinois, California, Georgia and Ohio. Dilip worked for Sherwin Williams his entire career and ultimately retired as Vice President of Engineering in 2008. During this time period, he also earned an Executive MBA.
Dilip will be remembered for his big personality, quick wit, keen intellect, charisma and charm. He was fun-loving and adventurous: skiing black diamond slopes in California, Colorado and Utah, successfully birdieing the 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass golf course in Florida, and salmon fishing in Alaska. Dilip enjoyed watching football and tennis on the weekends. He also loved music from a range of genres and made a hobby of staying current on new songs.
Dilip is survived by his devoted wife, Anjali, who loved and cared for him with all of her heart. He is also survived by his children Ursula and Sanjay, who will be forever grateful for the hard work and sacrifices he made to provide the very best for them and who will carry his advice and guidance in their hearts throughout their adult lives. Dilip is further survived by his younger brother Milind, who he tremendously adored, and his joyful grandsons Seyjan and Rohan.
