Ernest "Jerry" Steven Lum
March 7, 1964 – October 25, 2018
On the 25th of October 2018 the world lost Ernest “Jerry” Lum. He is survived by his mother, Shirley Adams; sister, Sherri Lum Alarcon; brother, Mike Premmer; his sons, Benjamin and Jared Lum; his daughters, Heather and Sara Nicholoff; and wife, Dorothy Lum.
Jerry was born March 7, 1964 in Washington, D.C. His family relocated while he was a baby to Los Angeles where he would spend the rest of his childhood and High School years. While in High School Jerry’s bright mind shone when he won a citywide chess tournament. After his graduation, Jerry enlisted in the Army. Jerry served in Special Operations for four years from 1983 to 1987 when he was discharged; receiving an Army Achievement Medal and numerous Letters of Appreciation from his commanding officers during his service.
After he left the service, Jerry returned to California for a time, then spent years in Germany and traveling all around the world. He had many adventures during this period of his life; living with monks in Tibet and studying martial arts in China or Japan. Eventually he landed in the Los Angeles area where he founded his own company and began to teach himself how to work on computers, finally ending up in the Bay Area several years later. Throughout, he leveraged that knowledge into better and better opportunities until he became an IT administrator for Epiq.
In 2013, Jerry began dating the love of his life in Dorothy. They dated for over 5 years before getting married in August. This fulfilled a dream for Jerry; connecting his sons, new daughters, and his bride into a single extended family; “The Brady Bunch minus two kids and a maid.”
Beneath a bold and brash exterior, Jerry was a man who embodied three attributes at his core: Strength, Courage, and Honor. He accepted everyone as they were and would help them to become their best self. In the words of his eldest son, Benjamin; “You were the bravest man I know, and I will miss you my whole life.”
A memorial service in Jerry’s honor will be held at the San Francisco Columbarium and Funeral Home on Saturday, November 17th 2018 at 11:00 AM. His family asks that you consider making donations to Pets For Vets in honor of Jerry’s service and love of animals.
