H. Welton Flynn was a Man of Integrity, Innovative thinker and accountability. He was a successful Business Man, a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, friend to his church and dedicated Public Servant. He took great pride in being an American and made the most of his Country had to offer. Born in Blackville, South Carolina, he worked at odd jobs as a young boy to help his family during the depression. In 1942, he moved to the state of California. After completing his tour in the United States Army he was honorably discharged. Welton attended Golden Gate University and earned the Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting and was licensed by the State of California in 1949.
He was owner of a highly successful accounting firm, where he worked as a Certified Public Accountant, a business he continued to work until his semi-retirement. He was also owner of several concessions at the San Francisco International Airport.
Welton married his beloved sweetheart, Juanita Calhoun a union that lasted short of fifty years. From this union two sons were born, Welton Cedric and Gerald Allan, and his granddaughter Tiffany , who he referred to as "the love of my life". Juanita transitioned on Saturday November 2, 1991.
Welton was a member of Saint Paul of the Shipwreck Church, where he served as a member of the Finance Council, Member of Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem (President), Father's Club - All Hallow Dads (President), Saint Ignatius Dad's Club. He was an avid contributor to the church and it's works.
In 1962 Welton served on the Grand Jury, in 1970 he served as a member of the Public Utlities Commission, 8 terms as president of the Commission, in 1992 he served on the San Francsico Convention and Visitors Bureau (Chairman), member of Board of Directors of a major San Francisco Corporation and Chairman of the Board for several years. He was the first African –American to serve in these positions. He retired in February 2008 and became Chairman-Emeritus.
Welton is recognized with many accomplishments and awards, including leadership in assisting Public Utilities Commission (PUC) with the establishment Affirmative Action Programs for Women-Owned and Minority-Owned firms to obtain city contracts through the commission.
In July 1989 the $30, 000, 000 Motor Coach Division Building was named in his honor "H Welton Flynn Coach Division".
In August 2000 Welton was awarded the Pro-Ecclesia Award from Pope John Paul II, for service to the Archdiocese of San Francisco, one of 50 Catholics in the Diocese with the Honor.
Welton was a member of many organizations including the National Association for the Advancement of Color People (life member 30 years), Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc (life member for 50 years), Father St. Paul of the Shipwreck Church, Beta Upsilon Boule (for 25 years), California State of Accountants (for 60 years).
Welton will also be remembered by his two sons: Welton C. (Phyllis) Flynn and Gerald A. (Corevia), Flynn, one granddaughter, Tiffany C. Flynn, one brother, Willie A. Flynn (Evelyn), three sisters Evelyn (James) Lewis, Delores Brisbon, Barbara (John) Flynn-Tolliver, several nieces, nephews, cousins, numerous friends and acquaintances.
A visitation will be held on Monday, March 28th, 2016 from 5pm to 8pm with a Rosary held at 7pm at Halsted N. Gray – Carew & English, 1123 Sutter St., San Francisco, CA94109 . A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 29th, 2016 at 10:00am at Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption, 1111 Gough St., San Francisco, CA 94109 followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery 1500 Mission Rd., Colma, CA.
