Former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Visa Inc.
Joseph W. Saunders, former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Visa Inc., who played a pivotal role in transforming the company into a publicly traded global payments leader, passed away on November 2, 2026.
Joe became Chairman and CEO of Visa Inc. in May 2007, overseeing its transformation from a private association of financial institutions into a publicly traded corporation. Under his leadership, Visa completed what was then the largest initial public offering in U.S. history in 2008. He subsequently guided the company's expansion into digital payments before retiring in March 2013.
His distinguished career in financial services began with establishing Household Credit Services, which he built into an $18 billion business. He was best known at the time for launching the GM Card, the largest co-branded credit card. Subsequent positions included Chairman and CEO of Providian Financial Corporation and Fleet Credit Card Services. He served as Chairman of MasterCard International's Board of Directors in 1996.
Following his retirement from Visa, Joe remained active in the investment community, serving as a Special Advisor to Reverence Capital Partners and as Chairman and General Partner of Green Visor Capital.
Joe was born in Chicago, Illinois. He earned his bachelor's degree in business administration and MBA from the University of Denver, which awarded him an honorary doctorate in business in 2009. He later served on the university's Board of Trustees. In 2018, Joe and his wife, Sharon, established the Saunders Leadership Academy Endowed Scholarship Fund at DU, providing scholarships, mentorship and leadership development opportunities to students with significant financial need, many of whom are the first in their families to attend college. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Teach For All, reflecting his longstanding commitment to expanding educational opportunities.
Those who knew Joe personally will remember his humor, integrity, and deep sense of fairness. He instinctively looked for the good in others. He cared deeply for the people in his life, and his kindness, loyalty, and generosity of spirit earned him lasting affection and respect.
While Joe's professional achievements will endure in an industry he helped shape, those closest to him will remember him for the man he was, rather than the positions he held. He touched many lives for the better and will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Sharon; his son, TJ, and daughter-in-law, Molly; his daughter, Christine, and son-in-law, Peter; his three beautiful granddaughters, Anna, Sophie, and Charlotte; and his sister, Laura.
A celebration of Joe's life will be held on Friday, November 20, 2026, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Four Seasons Hotel San Francisco, 757 Market Street, San Francisco.
