With great sadness we note the loss of our beloved, Luigina, "Louise" Ferrando in her ninety-eighth year
Louise was born in a snowstorm in the small Italian alpine village of Castelletto D'Erro. She lived through many hardships and dangers, including the Second World War, and then married Nicholas Ferrando who was studying medicine. He brought her to San Francisco on New Years Day,1948.
She helped to manage his practice in the Outer Mission and in 1952 delivered her daughter, Carla Catherine. Carla was born prematurely and her difficult delivery left her blind.
Louise dedicated herself to nurturing Carla's musical talents. Her support helped Carla to attain a Masters in Music at SF State and she transformed their ground floor into a studio where Carla could teach piano.
She lost her husband on a trip to Italy in 1996. A few years later, she met a widower, Alberto Alpi and became close and loving companions. Tragically, Carla was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008 and despite great efforts, succumbed in 2011. Alberto helped Louise to overcome her great sadness and to live on. He was with her until her passing.
She was a wonderful kind and caring woman, who will be sorely missed.
We want to thank the staff at CPMC'S Van Ness Campus for the care and concern they showed her. And to Lily, Tony, and Fe for their kindness in easing her passing.
In lieu of flowers, you may donate to St Jude Children's Hospital.
Services will be held on December 16th 10:30 am at Sts Peter and Paul Church, 666 Filbert St in San Francisco. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma
