Marilyn was born to Joseph and Irene (Brunell) Goldberg in Worcester, Massachusetts where she was raised. She attended Worcester State College and Quinsigamond Community College. At 21, she migrated to San Francisco and found her new home in the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco where she met and married Nicholas Freiberg; later divorced. From there she moved to Daly City, then Pacifica, and finally in 1985, to her cherished home in the Westwood Park district of San Francisco. Marilyn touched the lives of many San Franciscans through her work at The Guardsman, Bank of America, the Stop Aids Project, Cole Hardware, and Food Service Partners.
She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, playing card games, vacationing in Hawaii and watching Warriors basketball. Marilyn was always welcoming, whether it was for some honest advice, someone to just listen, or to share a laugh, which brought comfort to all who knew her. Next to her two daughters, the light of her life was her three granddaughters. She is survived by her loving daughters, Ilicia (Robert) Ellis and Rachel (Tyson) Tano; granddaughters, Mariah Ellis, Isabella and Alexis Tano; two brothers, Howie (Lynn) Goldberg and David (Blanca) Goldberg; two sisters, Sharon Goldberg and Amy (Howard) Hammond; three nephews, two nieces and four great-nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Congregation Beth Israel Judea, located at 625 Brotherhood Way, San Francisco on October 28th at 10:30am. Contributions in Marilyn’s memory may be sent to the American Diabetes Association, the American Heart Association, or the Jewish Community Federation of San Francisco.
