Peter Andrew Gergay, 79, of San Francisco, CA died peacefully on September 11, 2020, surrounded by the love of his wife of 51 years and his two children. Peter was born in Budapest, Hungary, survived the Holocaust as a child, and later courageously fled Hungary alone during the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 to immigrate to America. Peter retired from the US Army and Air Force Exchange Service after a 30 year career and then launched a second career doing Hungarian translation work.
Peter will forever be remembered for his warmth, generosity, and good humor. Some of Peter’s greatest pleasures were soccer and poker. He was also a bibliophile who enjoyed nothing more than reading at a café with strong espresso and good pastry. He lives on in the hearts of his wife, Margot Gergay of San Francisco, CA; his daughters, Nicole (Lars) Schou of Oakland, CA and Andrea (Nakia) Baird of San Francisco, CA; his grandchildren, Max Schou, Anna Schou, Sophia Baird, and Oliver Baird; his brother, Gabriel (Judith) Gillon of Herzliya, Israel; and his close cousins, Aviva Peer of Gedera, Israel; Katalin Gergely of Budapest, Hungary; and Ron Callus of Sydney, Australia.
Peter’s life will be celebrated in a private family service. Those who wish to honor Peter may do so by giving to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in his memory.
