November 13, 1929 – January 17, 2021
Roberto Fernando Gluckmann died peacefully at The Sequoias San Francisco where he had been a resident since 2011. He was 92 years old.
Roberto was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina where he attended medical school at Universidad de Buenos Aires. After finishing his education, he married his sweetheart
Maria Graziella Miyara (Marucha) from Mendoza on June 9, 1956.
In December 1957, Roberto and Marucha attended the First World Congress of Proctology in Mar del Plata where he translated from Spanish for the English-speaking doctors. He did so well, he was offered several desirable positions, including one with the prominent Sir Francis Avery Jones in the United Kingdom and another at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. He accepted the latter offer. On May 16, 1958, Roberto and Marucha set sail on a Moore-McCormack ocean liner from Buenos Aires for the one-month voyage to New York, especially enjoying a stopover in Brazil.
While practicing as a gastroenterologist at the stimulating environment of Henry Ford Hospital, Roberto and his beloved wife began their family. In 1974, because of Marucha’s health condition that was not helped by the cold weather in Detroit, they relocated to Visalia, California where he joined the Kaweah Medical Group until his retirement.
After Marucha’s death in 2011, Roberto made the transition to San Francisco where he made his home within the community at The Sequoias. He continued there to pursue his interests in stamp collecting, reading, attending classical music concerts and opera performances. He took every opportunity to dance tango with his tango teacher, Camille Cusamano. He also undertook the writing of a short memoir about his passionate life with Marucha with the assistance of writer Francine Brevetti of San Francisco.
Roberto is survived by his daughter Ema Ines Gluckmann, his granddaughter Rachel Esther Chancellor, son-in-law Edward Chancellor, all of Sacramento and his son Alex Gluckmann of Visalia.
