Hi Russell, I didn’t know you passed away. I’m so sorry. I will always remember you

I went to High School with Russell back in good old Carsonville, Mi. Back in the 60’s.
We were on the same football and basketball team he was a great player.
I did not know it until many years later but we have lived about 120 miles from each other every since I got out of the military

Hello Diane, sorry I never got to meet you.  I knew Russell through mutual friends, spent some time with him in SF the fall of 2003 (we masqueraded as The Dell Dudes), also at his place in Trout Lake MI.  Also sorry I never got to play tennis against him even though I know he'd blow me off the court.  This the 4th? time this year I received notice of someone younger than me who passed.  Strange feelings indeed.  I wish you peace and many happy memories.  

I have many fond memories of Russ, from trout Lake Michigan to when he lived with Leslie and myself in Holly Park. Amusing, erudite, he will be long in my thoughts. Feckin nutter! RIP 

Russ was a dear loyal  friend. I believe that we met on a tennis court in San Francisco forty years ago. He soon became part of a circle of friends that was more like a family.

He was a lifelong student, great conversationalist and interested in many topics. 

I had the privilege of having lunch at Russ and his wonderful wife Diane's home in San Francisco a couple of summers ago. Always a gentleman,  he escorted me back to our friend Linda's home on his way to go birding. I've never seen him so happy and content. 

I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to Diane, who was the light of his life. 

Rest in peace Russ. You will be missed but not forgotten. 

I'm glad I had the pleasure of knowing him and loved his outlandish sense of humour. We need people like Russ in our lives.

Russ was the most loyal of friends to me. He was one of the kindest and thoughtful people I have ever been honored to meet. He was one of a kind, seemingly simple and relaxed on the outside but behind the veneer was someone who harbored a very intelligent and perceptive mind. Russ was well read both in literary books and also social history whether it was local or overseas. A keen ornithologist reflects his love of nature and the nuance it holds  We have all lost someone remarkable. My deepest sympathies go to Diane his wife and best friend, who is no doubt very deeply grieving at Russ's passing away.  Russ was someone very special I will miss him dearly as will so many others. He was the best man at my wedding and was also the best companion in my life. 

Russ  was a fellow student in Joe Morlan’s Field Ornithology class at City College.  He was a wonderful, kind intelligent man, gifted with a gentle sense of humor.  I enjoyed conversing with him during class breaks, and on occasional field trips to Bay Area birding destinations.  We, as a birding community, have lost a well-loved member. I feel sad and will miss him greatly. However, I suspect that his spirit will be present in viewing our avian friends, especially the rare and beautiful species. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. 

Russ taught my husband and I the routes for the Colma section (17) of the San Francisco Christmas Bird Count, so that we could take over. He was, as all birders seem to be, unique. He went places no one else went and always found good stuff. And he always wore shorts.
