youngest of three, daughter of José Díaz Hornedo and Inez Villá Hornedo.
In 1960, at a shoe factory in Los Angeles, Robert Miranda (19) was on the machine
making shoe boxes when he was first introduced to Cecilia Hornedo (15) by her late cousin. “She
was really pretty, tall, well-educated… and wore a white skirt with roses over a petticoat, a white
blouse, white flats and a pink sweater with a French poodle stitched on the side. We were
attracted to each other right on the spot,” said Robert remembering the first time he met Cecilia.
Cecilia married Robert in the Los Angeles courthouse on April 22, 1961. In 1965, they moved
into their forever home in El Sereno, where they raised four daughters; Sandra, Diane, Michelle
and Bobbie. As a family, they created timeless memories in their motorhome traveling up and
down the coasts of Mexico and throughout western US National Parks.
After 11 years of raising her girls from home, Cecilia began working for LA Unified
School District in 1973. Meanwhile, she earned her bachelors degree in American history from
Cal State LA in 1977. Cecilia taught mathematics, history and ESL classes at El Sereno Middle
School until her retirement 35 years later.
Throughout her life, Cecilia enjoyed knitting, attending rodeos and collecting her beloved
chickens. She spent her later days walking with Robert and her Chihuahua ‘babies’, cooking for
her neighbors, talking on the phone and collecting countless lotto tickets. Cecilia spent her last
days dancing to the music with Robert. On June 11, 2020, Cecilia passed peacefully in her own
room with her husband and babies by her side.
A dedicated wife, a loving mother and a supportive grandmother, Cecilia is survived by
her husband, Robert Miranda, 4 daughters and spouses: Sandra Betancourt, Diane and Carlos
Ortiz, Michelle and Jimmy Muñoz, and Bobbie and Gabriel Cañez, as well as 12 grandchildren
and 9 great grandchildren.
Cecilia Hornedo Miranda was loved by numerous friends, family and neighbors. Her
feisty demeanor, her sense of humor and her limitless capacity to care for those around her will be
greatly missed and will live on in our hearts forever.
