Biography

Dr. Chor Tin Lau passed away on July 14, 2019 at the age of 81. He was a long time resident of San Marino, California, and more recently, of Alhambra, but he began his well-traveled life in Vietnam. He was born on May 4, 1938 to Mr. Luu Vinh and Mrs. Quach Dao. He went on to earn his undergraduate degree from the University of Melbourne in Australia, his Master’s degree from the McMaster University in Canada, and his doctorate from the University of Oregon here in the United States.

His degrees were in accounting, and he made his career and found his calling in shaping the minds of future generations as a professor of accounting at California State University Los Angeles, where he taught for 17 years. He loved teaching and helping people, which applied to everyone from his family members, to his students, to friendly acquaintances, as he later became a knowledgeable and prolific docent at The Huntington. He cheerfully and cleverly guided visitors through the Chinese Garden, the Estate Tour and the Japanese Garden for nearly a decade, continuing his lifelong passion for learning and nurturing growth and knowledge in others.

Dr. Lau is survived by his wife, Kwan Lau, his children Phillip Leung, Annie Collins, Jonathan Lau and Amanda Lau, and his grandchildren Derek and Ellen Leung and Leah and Sean Collins.
