Anais Nin
Third daughter (out of 22 children) of William S. Dale & Pansy Miller Dale known as the Vaudeville troupe, “The Dale Fun Show.”
Sunny loved the Country-western lifestyle and music. In fact, she sang, played the guitar and was an expert yodeler while traveling all through Central and South Texas at the young age of 22. During those touring days, her show business name was “Tuffy” Dale.
The earlier nickname, “Tuffy” suited her as she was always an independent, feisty, no-nonsense rebel from her youth on into her final years living at the San Dimas Retirement Home.
Sunny sang on the radio, toured 47 states and one of her promotional stands for a Local radio station was as a Flagpole Sitter!
Sunny married Frank Johnson and was devoted to him throughout their marriage. They shared many hobbies together including handcrafted leatherwork after working at Tandy’s Leather Goods. After Franks' death, she moved to California to be with the remaining Dale family. Living in Los Angeles, she had various jobs including waitressing at the famous Carter's Deli on Fairfax Avenue. Sunny became a nurse and worked in hospitals and as an in-home nurse for many years. She loved helping and taking care of her patients.
She lived several years as a resident of Larchmont Village, a community in Los Angeles. She worked independent jobs as a house cleaner and dog sitter. It didn’t take Sunny long to become a regular to all the shops where people knew her by name.
When she retired, Sunny moved to subsidized housing on Fairfax Ave & Santa Monica Blvd. which allowed her walk everywhere for her needs and interests. She frequented the stores often enough that again, they knew her by name as she would make a point of visiting certain shops to simply visit. The Dale family scattered around the world to chase their dreams and Sunny filled that gap with unconditional love of dogs. She was happiest when spending time with dogs as their “Aunt” or just stopping on the street to visit with any passing canine. Sunny lived at Kingsley Manor Assisted Living for many years before living her last two years at San Dimas Memory Care.
Sunny was the last of the Miller-Dale generation and is now survived by numerous nieces and nephews in various states across the country.
Per Sunny’s wishes to not make a such a fuss, there will be no public memorial service and she will be cremated by Pierce Brothers on 12-31-2020. Memories and expressions of sympathy can be shared at dignitymemorial.com. In leu of flowers please consider making a contribution in Sunny’s name to your local animal rescue or support a local pet therapy visitation program at a retirement center in your community.
Aunt Sunny’s family would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to the care-providers at Kingsley Manor, San Dimas Memory Care and Mission Hospice for the Love and excellent care they provided to our dear Aunt Sunny!
