

Fred was born on December 15, 1935 in Germany where he grew up and was educated.
Fred immigrated to the United States in the early 60s when the border between East and West Berlin was closed.
Prior to immigrating to the United States, he was able to travel by bike and train throughout Europe working at various nurseries in places like England and the Netherlands.
He began work at the Huntington in 1965 and his impact over the years has been immense.
Fred designed and installed the first modern irrigation system,
participated in many field collecting expeditions in Mexico, oversaw countless garden projects including responding to many windstorms and other disasters, and was Superintendent during an era in which the public gardens doubled in size.
Fred celebrated his 50th anniversary as an employee at the Huntington on May 3 of this year.
He was an unbelievable man, husband, father, brother, uncle and friend. He lived his life with honor, integrity and selflessness. He was devoted to his family, his friends and the Huntington.
Fred raised his family in a home on the Huntington's property. He is survived by his wife Rose and their three daughters, Silvia, Jennifer, and Susan.
He will be greatly missed.
Services will be held at Pierce Brother Turner Steven’s Mortuary in San Gabriel on July 5.
There will be an informal memorial service at 3:00PM.
Family and friends are invited to a gathering for remembrance to pay their respects and enjoy snacks and refreshments from 2:00PM to 7:00PM.
