Bill and Mireya have always been like family to us!  They lived in the apartment behind our house and were a part of our lives for as long as I can remember.  When my little brother, Dougie, fell and broke his arm in the yard, Bill was out there immediately, comforting him and making sure the rest of us were okay.  We were all so sad when they moved away!  But the wonderful thing about Bill is that he continued to be a part of our lives.  Whether it was sending us DVDs or just being at events that were important to us, we always felt loved and special.  I will miss Bill dearly.

Bill and Mireya rented the apartment above our garage for perhaps 17 years.  (We inherited them when we bought the house.)  They were wonderful tenants, and became good friends.

Bill always showed an interest in our children.  He would talk with them (not down to them) about things they were interested in.

Bill would also sometimes talk about his work as a counselor at Cal State LA.  I could tell by the things he said that he cared about and advocated for his students.

Bill was a trained psychologist, and I often wondered what he thought of me from a psychological perspective.  Fortunately, he was kind enough to keep his opinions on that point to himself.  However, he did tell me a few times that Ladell and I were good parents.  That was a compliment I treasured, both because he knew what he was talking about, and because he was honest.

Bill and Mireya gave many wonderful gifts to our children.  I could tell that they put a lot of thought into them.

I remember when Bill got sick the first time, and the hoops he jumped through to get treatment in Seattle.  They kept the apartment while they were away, because they (and we) had confidence they would come back, and resume normal living.  But when they came back, their cat, Noche, had gone missing.  Bill seemed more worried about Noche's well-being than his own.

Although Bill never professed a religion, he lived a good Christian life, and devoted himself to the welfare of others.  He also had the discernment to marry a saint.

Bill, we pray that the Lord will watch over your, and look out for Mireya now you are away.  And Mireya, we hope you will continue to be our friend.
