Norma was preceded in death by her parents, Art and Sybil Doman, her husband, Frank Formica, their infant son Earl Thomas Formica and her brother Earl Doman. She is survived by her four siblings, Verl Doman, Dee Doman, Ellen Larsen and Stephen Doman. She is also survived by four of her children, Michael Formica, Susan Lovett, Nancy Larkin and Edward Formica, along with 14 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.
Norma was born and raised on a farm in Ontario, Oregon, where she enjoyed a wonderful childhood with her loving parents, and five younger siblings. She rode her horse, Ranger, to school and played the drums in her high school band, which she enjoyed so much she made sure her children had opportunities to learn musical instruments and enjoy the fun and joy music would bring into their lives. She attended Brigham Young University and studied nursing which began her lifelong career of caring for people.
While at BYU she met Frank on a blind date. He was stationed at nearby Hill Air Force Base. They fell in love and were married in 1954 and had 54 happy years together. They moved around with the service which interrupted her studies at BYU. When Frank finished his service with the Air Force They moved to be near his family in Long Island, New York, but a short time later work brought them to California and with their little family they settled in San Pedro, California where they lived happily for forty years.
When all of her kids were in school Norma worked to finish her BSN from CSULB, then sought her teaching credential. She taught nursing at Harbor Occupational Center with Los Angeles School District for nineteen years. She also was a Home Health Nurse in both San Pedro and Hemet.
As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she has served in many positions including Den Leader, Primary President, Relief Society President, Seminary Teacher and Compassionate Service Leader. After their retirement Norma and Frank served a senior mission for the Church in Colorado. Upon completion of their mission Norma and Frank moved to Hemet, CA to be closer to some of their children and obtain some long dreamed about space for Frank’s workshop and Norma’s orchards and gardens. After Frank’s passing in 2008 Norma became active in and soon became a leader of the Senior Single Adult Group in her congregation where she made dear friends. She hosted their meetings in her home every week. She even bought a van so she could take everyone to the temple, which they did every two weeks for fifteen years!
Norma had many hobbies and talents including sewing lovely quilts, embroidery, genealogy, growing delicious fruits, vegetables and beautiful flowers and decorating cakes for weddings and other occasions. She enjoyed spending time with friends and family and was especially gifted at baby whispering. She somehow knew how to calm any baby. She was rarely seen at gatherings without a baby on her lap or children around her reading stories.
She will be greatly missed. A viewing will be held Thursday, March 6th, from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at the Miller Jones Mortuary at 165 W. 7th St., San Jacinto.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 8, 2025 at 11:00 am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1151 Park Ave. San Jacinto, CA 92583.
