Today, we gather not only to remember the accomplishments of Aldon Jacarus Ramon Smith, but to celebrate the man, the son, the brother, the father, the nephew, the friend, and the child of God whose life touched so many.
Born on September 25, 1989, Aldon’s journey carried him from Mississippi to Iowa and eventually onto some of the world’s biggest stages. Yet no matter where life took him, Mississippi remained home in his heart. Family meant everything to Aldon, and he always looked forward to returning home to reconnect with the people who loved him first.
At the age of 13, Aldon publicly declared his faith through baptism at Covenant Seventh-day Adventist Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. As an active covenant kid, he learned the value of service, leadership, and standing before others with confidence. Those early experiences helped shape the man he would become and laid the foundation for a life marked by perseverance, determination, and service to others.
Aldon attended Raytown High School in Raytown, Missouri, where he excelled as both a student and athlete in football and basketball. During his senior year, he emerged as one of Missouri’s top football prospects, earning statewide recognition for his talent, discipline, and work ethic.
Following graduation, Aldon attended the University of Missouri, where he played defensive end for the Missouri Tigers. His impact was immediate, earning Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year honors and later All-Big 12 recognition. His outstanding collegiate career led to his selection as the seventh overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers, fulfilling a dream that began years earlier on the playing fields of Missouri.
During his professional football career, Aldon played for the San Francisco 49ers, Oakland Raiders, and Dallas Cowboys. He quickly established himself as one of the league’s most dominant defensive players, earning Pro Bowl honors and helping lead the 49ers to Super Bowl XLVII. While football brought him national recognition, those closest to him knew that his greatest titles were son, father, brother, nephew, and friend.
To many, Aldon was known for his athletic gifts. To those who knew him best, he was much more. He was a young man who loved his family deeply. He was protective of those he cared about, loyal to his friends, and proud of his roots. He loved animals, enjoyed being around family, and cherished the simple moments that fame could never replace.
Like all of us, Aldon experienced victories and challenges. His life was not defined by headlines, statistics, or public perception, but by the relationships he built and the lives he touched along the way. Through every season of life, he remained someone’s son, someone’s brother, someone’s father, someone’s nephew, and someone’s friend.
Aldon leaves to cherish his memory his loving mother, Kembrya Smith; his father, Thurston Smith (Esther); his beloved son, Aulis Faustino Smith; his sister, Rhia Janay Smith; his stepsister, Sierra Gant; his cherished niece, Zhuri Smith; his grandparents, Ruby Smith, Albert Holmes (Patricia), and Lamar Edwards.
He also leaves behind a devoted circle of family members whose love helped shape his life, including his aunts Katrina White, Tanyika Ellis (Charles Dunn), and Danyelle Holmes, who loved him as their own and served as second mothers. He is also survived by his aunt Augustine McDole (Corbin), uncle Michael Smith (Tanja), and a host of cousins, relatives, friends, teammates, and loved ones who will forever carry his memory in their hearts.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Julia Ellis Edwards; paternal grandfather, Augustus Smith; stepbrother, Tony Gant; and maternal great-grandparents L.C. and Bertha Ellis, Andrew Tarden, and Inez Holmes.
Though his earthly journey ended too soon on June 13, 2026, Aldon’s impact remains. His laughter, strength, generosity, faith, and love for family continue to live on through those who knew and loved him.
Today, we remember Aldon not simply for what he achieved, but for who he was—a devoted father, loving son, caring brother, loyal friend, and child of God. His story lives on through his son, his family, his friends, and every life he touched.
Forever Loved. Forever Remembered. Forever Missed.
A Tribute to our Son
It was September 25, 1989
When we first held you to our chest
Very young parents still learning our way
But we vowed to give you our best
Most of the world knew you as a Aldon Smith
but we knew you as much, much more—
the quiet strength behind the spotlight,
the heart that gave without keeping score.
We knew your laughter off the field,
the kindness others rarely saw,
the way you lifted those around you
with gentle hands and humble awe.
They cheered your name beneath bright lights,
watched your victories unfold;
but we were blessed to know your spirit—
your courage, deeper far than gold.
You were a son, a friend, a light,
a soul so rare, so fiercely kind;
and though the world admired your gifts,
we knew the beauty of your mind.
We remember you in morning light,
That infectious smile that filled every room,
in the way your eyes held endless hope
before the shadow came too soon
As Mom, I held your first breath near,
felt your heartbeat match my own;
As Dad, I dreamed of the man you’d be,
of roads together still unknown.
The world may remember the games you played,
the records set, the crowds you moved—
but we will carry the love you gave,
the life you lived, the hearts you proved.
And though your time was far too brief,
and words fall short of what we feel,
we hold you close in every breath—
our son, our pride, forever real.
And now we stand with empty arms,
yet fuller hearts than words can show—
for loving you has shaped our lives
in ways the world may never know.
So rest where pain has no more claim,
where light surrounds you, soft and true;
we’ll carry you in every step,
in everything we say and do.
Yet even as we ache with loss,
and questions fill the empty air,
we know our love has crossed with you—
a bond no end could ever tear.
So rest Jacarus, in perfect peace,
where pain and sorrow cannot stay;
we’ll carry you in all we are
until we meet again someday.
And though this parting breaks our hearts,
one truth remains, forever true:
we are still yours, and you are ours—
in everything we say and do.
Mom and Dad
A Tribute to My Brother
You weren’t just my brother—
You were a part of me,
The one who knew my flaws the best
And still stayed endlessly.
You got on my last nerve sometimes,
And I know I did the same—
But underneath the noise, my brother,
Love burned steadier than flame.
And though we sometimes clashed like thunder,
And storms would fill the air,
There was never any doubt at all—
My love for you was there.
So take rest now Jacarus, free from burdens,
No more fights, no more pain…
But know I’d start those arguments
Just to have you back again.
Now there’s a silence where your voice used to be,
A space in my life that cannot be filled.
And I find myself wishing for just one more day—
One more laugh,
One more chance to say,
“I love you.”
You were taken too soon,
But the love we shared—
That stays.
It lives in every memory,
Every lesson,
Every part of me that carries you forward.
And know this—
No matter the distance between heaven and earth…
You will always be my brother.
And I will always love you.
Rhia
