Dear Alice,

I wanted to post something but I feel like I am not eloquent with my words but want to say a few things. I wished I lived closer to the Bay Area.

I admired the life you lived with your travels, grad school with Darlene at USF, your dancing from traditional Chinese to square and line dancing and hula to the roaring 20s. The most rememberable dance group  is  the historical Grant Avenue Follies. You did not watch life on the sidelines. You lived it.

Your dance group, Grant Avenue Follies, has a new rap  channeling their anger over the attacks on Asian Americans with feather dusters ... ("Da-da-da" translated Hit-hit-hit)

Mom,

Your friends, extended family, neighbors, adventures, dancing, trips, photos, and church family  have filled in a part of your life that I did not get to experience. You had a vibrant, independent spirit, and a personality that attracted many different kinds of people. I enjoyed meeting and embracing their part of you I did not know about.

Dear Alice,

I am missing you my baby sister. Your passing has sadden me. I watched over and went to school with you for many years. You even met Larry through me. I hope you are at peace and may the Lord be with you forever.

Mom, thank you for  making me feel special, supported, and loved.  You were generous as well. 

You chose to worship God with praise & worship music the day before you left.  Little did we know you were being prepared to worship God face to face.

I am glad Remy, Joshua, Ethan, and I were with you during your last week & conscious moments.  Ethan prayed, Joshua held your hand, Remy held your other hand and found your pulse and asked you if you could hear us, while I called 911. 

Thank you for lifting up your hand and waving goodbye.

I’m so glad Remy & I had a chance to tell you we love you and help tuck you into bed in the evenings. That was my chance to say goodbye to you without knowing it.

My warmest childhood memory was when you would clean my ears with an ear pick. I was deeply comforted by putting my head on your warm lap and having you hold my head with your  left hand while cleaning with the other.  It was a feeling of being loved & held by a nurturing mom.  

Thank you for encouraging my independence and letting me drive your car to church and to go out with friends.

Thank you for planting seeds and sharing about the Holy Spirit, teachings on the Rapture & End Times, enrolling me in the Upper Room Devotions, and discussing the Spirit filled temperament by Tim LaHaye.

I appreciate that your home was an open door and you also gave me ministry blessings & support including, but not limited to providing equipment and a place for ministry meetings.

You helped me to have more faith in God and to exercise my spiritual gifts, explore ministry, and seminary. You were kind to my friends and family.  You were also a wonderful grandma  and mother in-law, and for many years my housemate.  You were there for me and my family through many seasons, hills, and valleys.  I appreciate how you loved those I loved.

Your love & Jesus love lifted me. I hope you know how much I love you and miss you!



Oh Mommy, Sigh!  Forgive me for missing you so much.

Your spirit lives on in Heaven dancing and praising our Lord Jesus Christ.  We celebrate that you are in Heaven as your best self. “Therefore you now have sorrow, but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you." John 16:22

...I am so glad I was able to take you to Washington DC when I had to be there for work, and you had the opportunity to see the monuments, tour the area of the battle of Gettysburg, and eat at the historic Old Ebbitt Grill.  We walked the strip in Vegas after it became like an adult theme park.  You marveled at how much it had changed from decades ago.

For as long as I can remember you liked the beach.  We spent time at Playland, Lake Tahoe, Monterey, Santa Cruz, Capitola, and in your later years, we would eat with an oceanfront view at the Cliff House.  Three weeks before you went “home”, I had my last privilege to take you to overlook Ocean beach from the closed Cliff House.  It was a beautiful warm day with an unusually high surf. You relished the fresh air with a peaceful countenance.  

You influenced my preference for sci-fi movies, tanning in the sun, reading a good book, listening to music, strolling art & wine festivals and street fairs, and walking with God.  You saved me wellness articles and trusted me to prepare you healthy foods– vegetables, soup, salmon, chicken, and for dessert, almond cake.

You were so full of life and personality.  So many “mommaisms”, like the manner in which you prepared your oatmeal, the signs you hanged around the house, taking your teacher stance and wiggling your finger, and the way you would roll your eyes while saying “mama mia.”  You had a keen sense of humor.  During this pandemic you would try to reimburse me for food and supplies.  I told you I would not take your money but that you could buy me a drink when we could safely dine in a restaurant. You paused in thought and then said, “Okay.  Cheers!” as you motioned with an invisible glass.  Of course this drink never materialized, but one day in heaven at the great feast, we will have our toast!

Dear Momma,
I know that you are dancing and singing in heaven and saying things like, “it’s about time!” but I will miss you.  You are finally freed from the tragedies, great losses, sufferings, and worries about the family you had throughout your entire life.  You were a consistent presence in my life, and even now I sometimes forget you are gone.  I still hear your voice in my head commenting on situations or things people say or do.

I remember as a toddler how you used to style me up with bargain basement finds because you were a fashionista.  How I miss the days when I grew up of bringing you shopping at Chico’s where we would try on clothes and ask each other’s opinion.

I remember dancing lessons as a child and wearing itchy costumes and makeup for performances.  You always enjoyed dancing and after your retirement, you wore the itchy costumes and stage makeup for your performances at private and public venues.  You motivated me to participate in my church’s seasonal musicals and helped me put together many costumes.  I cherish seeing “Phantom of the Opera” and Cirque du Soleil’s “O” with you.  You encouraged me to play the piano from childhood all the way to my retirement.  The last day I saw you, I showed you my virtual performance on YouTube of my church’s choir and band rendition of “Unspeakable Joy”.  You smiled throughout the entire song as you watched me sing and play the keyboard....

My deepest condolences to all of you.  You "did good" taking care of her in her retirement.  She was always a joy to see, and the best memories of her was dancing.

My condolences to the Chan Family.  Although I didn’t meet you, you went home with Our Lord and Savior.  
I know you will be missed by your loved ones.  I pray for your family that has not been called home yet— especially your daughter Darlene.  Your daughter has taught me many things of the Chinese culture.

My heart goes out to all of you during this time of loss.  It has been an honored and privilege to have known your mother.  I shall remember her smile, kindness and spunk.  She’s one person I only know that has so many dancing outfits and grateful she let me borrowed one.  The video you put together as a tribute to your mother was absolutely touching and beautiful – Mrs. Chan would have loved it.  She definitely was surrounded by her children’s love and lived a very fruitful and fulfilling life.  May you find comfort and peace that your mother is with our loving Lord dancing away doing her step ball change and do si dos moves.  Mrs. Chan will always have a special place in my heart. Dear Darlene, Cherri, Curtis, Lisa and families,
Your mom, Mrs. Chan, was always inclusive and welcoming to me. I am thankful that she is at peace in her Heavenly home; nonetheless, I know first hand how much you miss her and the pain of death is not removed just because we believe in eternal life. Grieving presupposes that God is there and is listening, it is an act of faith. Praise the Lord that your mom professed and lived in the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ.

I would like to share with you all in two tangible ways:
First, about 20 years ago, your mom and I were classmates at the Richmond Recreation Center. We danced hula together for several sessions. Here is a video of your mom enjoying what she loved, dancing.

My parents and I always love running into Alice. We’ve been next door neighbors for a long time and Alice would give a wave and smile to my parents whenever they saw each other. I love seeing Alice enjoy the sun and good weather from behind her front gates. So serene and at peace. Our conversations were never long but the brief encounters gave us joy to know and have Alice as a neighbor. We think of her and miss her very much. 

For Alice Chan's Family,

I shall remember Alice as a wonderful and warm person.

She is very intelligent and understanding.  She has been a close friend to me, sharing good times and doing things together.  She has made my retirement years so much more enjoyable and memorable.  I shall miss her beautiful smile and her company.

I am sure for those of us who were fortunate enough to have known Alice will always think of her as someone precious and dear to the heart.

I wish her family comfort, and I know Alice is resting in peace.

Thank you for sharing the pictures.  They really give a sense of your mom.  It looks like she lead a very full life.  And her  beautiful smile comes through in every picture.   Take good care of yourselves during these difficult times.

Dear Cousins Dar, Cherri, Curtis and Lisa,

We offer our deepest condolences to you in the loss of your mom, our dear Auntie Alice. 
We have such fond memories of our family get togethers and how Auntie was always so fun and vibrant. She and Mom, Auntie Mary, shared a special bond as sisters. 
One memory that especially stands out for me took place at one of our family parties when Gung Gung was still alive. Mom and Auntie Alice (always the goofy sisters) were talking with Gung Gung. Mom and Auntie were joking with each other about something and then they pretended to get into a fight. It was hilarious seeing them face off with their dukes up and Gung Gung looking on wondering what the heck was going on. It was heartwarming to see them having fun and gave us a glimpse of our parents as kids, something we very rarely think about. 
Auntie will be greatly missed and we pray for you as you weather these trying times. Take care and God bless.

Deepest condolences for the lost of your dear mother. No one is quite like our mothers and I remember Curtis conducting the funeral for my own mother back in 1994.  It was the hardest moment of my life to grasp that I would have to live the rest of my earthly life without her. Thank you for this opportunity to share my memories of Alice. I got to know her in Bible Study at Temple Baptist Church. She was a delightful person to be around as she was always pleasant and made thoughtful contributions to the discussion. I look forward to seeing her again one day in Heaven which was the last topic we studied as a group.
