Alvin Eugene Champion, Jr., was born July 22, 1959, at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland, to Alvin Eugene Champion, Sr., and Yvonne Deloris Champion. He was a rambunctious youngster and loved to tease his siblings. As a child, Alvin loved to wander and explore, and mini “search teams” would often be deployed to look for him as he tested out his Boy Scouts training by exploring woods, creeks, hills, mountains, and streams on outings.
Alvin attended elementary school at Travis Air Force Base. When the family settled in San Jose, California, Alvin was baptized at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church where he was an active member. He graduated from Silver Creek High School, class of 1977, where he was on the football and basketball teams. After graduation, Alvin had a short stint in the Navy and then worked for NASA and Apple Computer.
Alvin moved to Sacramento in 1996 and worked several jobs. He overcame numerous obstacles, and despite many challenges he actively pursued his Associate of Arts degree from Sacramento City College. He was looking forward to transferring to Sacramento State University.
A foodie at heart, Alvin sought out all of the latest delicacies at the local restaurants in search of the ever-elusive “pheasant under the glass.” He also loved relaxing in his apartment while watching his favorite shows. Alvin loved the Lord, his faith was strong, and he enjoyed attending BOSS Church in Sacramento, California.
Forever cherishing his memory are his mother, Yvonne Chambers; sisters, Tamra Alcantara (James) and Sharon Holloway (Jerome); niece, Monique Holloway; nephews, Marcellus Alcantara (Ralasherrie), James Taran Alcantara (Nicole), Derek Alcantara, Lamar Holloway (Kaliicye), and Andre Holloway; a grandniece; two grandnephews; and many relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Alvin Eugene Champion, Sr.; stepfather, Joe Nathan Chambers; and brother, Curtis Albert Champion.
Rest easy, our gentle giant. God has spoken. You have taught us so much and given us abundant love and countless memories. We miss you greatly and look forward to being reunited with you in paradise.
