January 25, 1023 - November 30, 2011
Anthony died at age 88 of complications following a heart attack, after living an active independent life.
Born and raised in San Jose of Italian immigrants parents, Domenica Lazetera and Saverio Lovaglia from southern Italy, he graduated from SJ High. He began his college career at San Jose State before WWII. After, serving as an ensign in the aerologist department of the Navy, he enrolled at UCLA to finish his AB degree, changing his major from foreign languages to mathematics. He earned an MS in math from Stanford, and a PhD from UC, Berkeley. Being a teacher appealed to him because of the influence of his own teachers. He felt a love for knowledge and wanted to impart that to others.
In '51, he returned to SJS as an assistant professor in the math dept. Eventually becoming full professor, he imparted that knowledge to hundreds of students for 35 years. He, and wife, Florence, retired to their mountain home in Groveland, near Yosemite, for 20 years, returning to SJ in '08. Throughout his life, he never stopped speaking out for the disadvantage, or to right a wrong.
Preceded in death by his parents; wife, Florence; brothers Frank, Patrick; sisters Theresa, Mildred. He is survived by his sister, Rose Rivera; special friend, Mary Lou Filice; daughter, Toni (Henry Kampmeyer, Ashland, OR); sons, Michael (Valarie, Iowa City) & Larry (Diane, San Jose); numerous nieces & nephews. He was a loving and proud grandfather to Domenica Rose (Seattle), Dan (Chicago area), Anthony (San Jose), Lara Rose (Los Angeles), Hannah Rose & Kyle (IA City); and great-grandfather to Aaron & Avery (Chicago area).
