Bryan Butler passed away unexpectedly but peacefully at his home in San José, California, on October 1st 2018. Bryan was born in Hinsdale, Illinois, on September 27th, 1949. He was a 1967 graduate of Hinsdale Central High School and a 1971 graduate of Swarthmore College where he majored in Electrical Engineering. He also held an M.B.A. degree from the University of Chicago and a J.D. degree from the University of San Diego. His career included positions with leading technology innovators including Hewlett-Packard, 3Com, and IBM, as well as with the Pennie & Edmonds law firm. He was a respected knowledge leader in the field of intellectual property law, teaching at Lincoln Law School in San Jose and authoring a treatise on patent infringement damages. In addition, he delved deeply into interests including photography, sailing, skiing, scuba, tennis, golf, history, philosophy, theater, and music.
Bryan is survived by his wife Robin Sacolick, his sons Will and Jerry Butler, his brother Bruce Butler, his mother-in-law Janet Kunert Christman, brothers-in-law Greg Kunert and Larry Kunert, sisters-in-law Terri Butler, Carol Kunert, Judy Kunert, and nieces and nephews Jeff Kunert, Grant Butler, Kenyon Butler, Amy Kunert, Katie Kunert, and Nathan Kunert. Bryan was preceded in death by his father William Sanford Butler in 1973 and his mother Dawne Hope Catlos Butler in 2010.
Bryan’s exuberance, wit, curiosity, generosity, and loving kindness are greatly missed by his family, his colleagues at IBM Almaden Research, the Bay Area sonero community, El Mosquito performing group, and a broad and diverse network of social, professional, and community relationships. His life will be remembered at several events, including a Celebration of Life gathering in the coming months. Contributions, if desired, may be made to Doctors Without Borders.
