Carl passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 9, 2021, surrounded by family. A beloved husband, father, and “Poppop”, he is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Bea, son Craig (Phatjira) Macina, daughter Kathleen (Bill) Diekmann, and his grandsons Matthew Diekmann, Aidan Diekmann, and Connor Diekmann.
He grew up in New York where he became a Yankees fan after getting to see his childhood hero, Joe DiMaggio, play. His love for baseball continued to college where he played second base for the Queens College team. Rumor has it he was invited to try-out for the New York Giants minor league organization. Unfortunately, he broke his arm during a college game a week before try-outs. He was honored to be asked but knew he wouldn’t make the cut since he “ran well, but just too long in the same place.”
After college, he was commissioned a Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force where he rose to the rank of Captain flying F-86D Sabre jets. While in training for the Air Force, he met Bea on a blind date. It was love at first sight and they were married two years later. Soon after, they welcomed their son, Craig and their daughter, Kathleen.
Post Air Force, his 45-year career in sales began, which brought the family to San Jose when it was still orchards and vineyards. Carl enjoyed camping, playing volleyball with neighbors, and watching the San Francisco Giants. He passed his love for the San Francisco Giants to his children and grandchildren. He would never pass up an opportunity to watch a Giants game, even on his last day.
In retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his grandsons and traveling throughout the world. When not traveling, he would go to his grandsons’ Little League games, martial arts belt graduations, school events, and birthday parties. They were his pride and joy, and he was their hero.
Friends and family are invited to attend a Memorial Mass which will be held at Holy Spirit Church on Friday, June 18th at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Make-A-Wish foundation in Carl’s memory.
