Eleanor "Ellie" Mok was born in Philadelphia's Chinatown to immigrant parents, surrounded by 9 brothers and sisters. Later in life, she would tell her daughters stories about taking care of her younger siblings and working in her father's Chinese restaurant where the chief of police and head mobsters would be dining at the same time.
Ellie took great pride in the life her father built in America and the respect he inspired in the community. She, in turn, created a life for herself that was full of adventure and defied conventions. She supported herself through grad school, earning a Masters degree, and purchased a home and traveled the world – all before it was common for a single woman to do this on her own.
It was only after she had accomplished all of this that she married Gerald Mok and had two daughters, Alana and Kim. Along with raising her own children, she also nurtured countless others through her work as a kindergarten teacher. One of her greatest joys in life were her grandchildren, Tyler and Vivian. They never ceased to make her beam with happiness and pride.
Friends and family will always remember Ellie's wit, her love of collectibles like Lladros, paperweights, and bells (her daughters will definitely remember carefully dusting these items every weekend), and the classes she was constantly taking that introduced new design elements into her home, like artfully arranged flowers and quilts. They'll also remember her for the love and respect she inspired in the family she raised, the children she taught, and the friends she made.
