Fumi Oki, 90, of San Jose, CA passed away on April 20, 2014. Fumi was born December 26, 1923 in Olympia, WA to Yukozo and Tuji Sano. At 2 years of age, she moved to Fukuoka, Japan with her parents. After graduating high school, she became a grammar school teacher and taught until she travelled back to the United States in 1950 arriving in American Fork, Utah and married her husband of 50 years, Sadao Oki now deceased. Fumi moved to San Jose, CA in 1954 and has remained a resident of Santa Clara County until her passing.
Fumi was a very active member of the San Jose Buddhist Church participating in many church activities. Fumi was an excellent cook and helped the church making sushi for their annual Obon Festival. She taught members of the community the art of Japanese calligraphy and won many awards for her work. She enjoyed participating in San Jose’s Yu-Ai-Kai Senior Center activities and socializing with her friends.
Fumi is survived by her son, Naoaki Sano and daughter-in-law Gladys Sano of San Jose, CA; daughter, June Shinseki of San Jose, CA; brother, Toru Sano of Sacramento, CA; two sisters, Yaeko Matsuda of Sunnyvale, CA and Yoshie Sano of Fukuoka, Japan. She also leaves behind 6 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Private funeral services were held at the San Jose Buddhist Church.
