Visitation will be at Oak Hill Funeral Home and Memorial Park at the Chapel of the Roses 300 Curtner Avenue San Jose, 4-8 pm Wednesday, May 23rd and 10- 11 am Thursday May 24th. A service will follow from 11-12 pm on Thursday. Interment will be at Skylawn Memorial Park, Highway 92 Skyline Boulevard San Mateo at 3:30 May 24th.
Gaines was born March 31, 1930 to Jesse Martin and Mary (Mae) Adcock in Philadelphia, Mississippi. He was the youngest of 6 children. He was preceded in death by his son of 19 years Brent Adcock of Belmont, his mother Mary (Mae), Johnson Adcock, and his father Jessie Martin Adcock. Also by four brothers Jacob Adcock of San Antonio,TX., Jesse Adcock of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Windal Adcock of WoodCanyon Waters, Tx., and Perry Adcock of Huntsville, Alabama. Survivors include daughter Lisa Germano (Adcock) of San Jose, Edith Shoemake (Adcock) of Wayne County Mississippi, his two granddaughters Terra and Serena Manfro of Moss Beach, CA., many nieces and nephews spread throughout the United States, and his loving partner Junie of 43 years of Moss Beach, CA.
After Receiving a degree in education at Jones County Junior College in Ellisville, Mississippi. He joined the air force and spent one and a half years in the Azores as a precurement officer during the Korean conflict. He later resumed classes at Jones County J.C. and received his degree in business administration at Mississippi State University. Gaines joined the staff at I.B.M. in Dallas, TX 1956-1969. He was transferred to the Bay Area and spent the next 20 years working in San Jose at the Education Center building number 10. The end of his IBM career was spent at the Palo Alto office until his retirement of 34 years in 1990.
Gaines can be best remembered for his love of southern gospel music whereby he played piano and in the south sang in trios and quartets. His love of classic cars and the shows he participated in won him a house full of trophies. The 1931 cadillac he built from the ground up (Eva) was his pride and Joy, besides his partner Junie. Gaines was the ultimate optimist. His intellect, wit, and sense of humour cannot be denied. We will surely miss him.
