Gerald (Gerry) was born on January 26,1946 in Seattle, Washington to Francis O’Neill and Marie O’Neill (née Evans). Soon after he was born, the family moved to Spokane where he was raised with his many siblings. His favorite memory from childhood is going swimming every day in the summer with his brothers and sisters. He continued to love to swim into his adult years. Gerry went into the Army after graduating from high school and served in the Vietnam War. He was plagued by the atrocities of what war could do to people. After being discharged from the Army, he moved to Los Angeles. Gerry was a very hard worker and went into business for himself owning/managing some apartment buildings and convenience stores. He left Los Angeles in the late 80’s and moved back to Spokane.
Gerry found love when he met Thom Truong. They first bonded over their love of dancing and traveling. Thom and Gerry married on September 18, 1988. They had a good life together, enjoying traveling and just spending time together and with family.
Gerry was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in 2018. He was impressed with the love and world-wide unity of the Witnesses. He found great happiness with the people in the congregation. He was encouraged by the hope Jehovah provides through his son, Jesus Christ, to end the atrocities of war that had plagued him since he was in Vietnam, and all other wickedness and suffering on the earth and restore it to a paradise where people will be able to live forever in peace. – Psalms 37:10, 11, 29
Gerry died at Kaiser Hospital on December 4, 2025. He was 79 years old. Gerald was preceded in death by: his parents Francis and Marie O’Neill; siblings, John O’Neil, Dennis O’Neill, Denise O’Neill, Edna O’Neil, Laurance O’Neil, Mary Watson, Francis O’Neil, Linda Muller, Teresa O’Neil, Mark O’Neil; and son Patrick.
Gerry is survived by his wife of 37 years, Thom; daughters, Marie O’Neil and Dao Nguyen (husband Nha); son, Son Truong; brother, Michael O’Neil; granddaughter, Jenny Nguyen; three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gerry was dearly loved and will be missed until the day Jehovah God resurrects him to a restored paradise on earth where “death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore.” – Revelation 21:3, 4; Job 14:13-15
