Gilbert Baclay Doldolea, beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin, and friend, passed away at the age of 87 on May 13, 2024, in San Jose, CA, surrounded by his family. He was born on July 10, 1936, in Cebu City, Cebu, Philippines, to the late Sulpicio and Corazon. He was the oldest of siblings to Lucia Abella (predeceased), Milagros Encallado, and Fernando Doldolea (predeceased).
Gilbert was a man of great character and warmth, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Nelia Mata Doldolea, whom he married on April 29, 1964, in Manila, Philippines. Their marriage of 60 years stood as a testament to their enduring love and commitment.
An alumnus of Southwestern University in Cebu City, Philippines, Gilbert earned a Pharmacy degree, showcasing his dedication to his education and personal growth. He then worked at Mercury Drug and immigrated to the United States in 1971. He found a home in San Francisco, CA and a job as a warehouseman at VWR Scientific in Brisbane, CA, from 1972 to 1996, where his hard work and dedication shone through. In pursuit of a safe and stable environment for his family, he purchased a home and moved to south San Jose, CA in 1980, where he continued to reside until his death. He often sponsored, opened his home, cared for, and provided guidance to the many relatives who were newly immigrated from the Philippines. He always felt a sense of responsibility to help others become established as they transitioned into the United States.
Beyond his professional life, Gilbert was a man of many passions and interests. He found joy in hobbies such as golf, fishing, and watching news channels and his favorite Bay Area sports teams like the SF Giants, Golden State Warriors, and SF 49ers. He enjoyed going on cruises with his wife and traveling to destinations in Europe, the Caribbean, the Holy Land, and Mexico to name a few. As his travel became limited due to health and aging, his curiosity led him to explore the world through travel and food videos on YouTube, always eager to learn and experience new things, while also chatting with people on Facebook messenger. Gilbert also cherished moments spent at the casino, indulging in his love for playing slot machines.
Gilbert's greatest pride and joy were his family. He is survived by his wife, Nelia Mata Doldolea, his son Ronald Doldolea (Mary Ann), his daughters Chona Baizas (Carlito) and Ginelyn Kudsi (Anthony), and his adoring grandchildren Giselle Baizas, Gwendolyn Doldolea, Ryan Doldolea, Apollo Kudsi, and Ashlyn Kudsi. His love and wisdom will forever live on in the hearts of his family.
In honoring Gilbert Baclay Doldolea's memory, let us remember his kindness, his smile, and his unwavering love for his family. He touched the lives of many and will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. May his spirit live on in the cherished memories he leaves behind and as he would say, “Oh Boy! It’s time to Rest in Peace. Ok. Thank you. Good Bye!” Rest in peace, Gilbert, knowing that you are forever loved and remembered.
