Hard on the outside. Soft on the inside. A very insightful, witty,intelligent, and compassionate man. A good friend, with a kind smile. He and his wife Beverly are sadly missed, but fondly remembered.

I feel honored to have known Dr. Harvey Slater and his wife, what an extraordinary man to have ever worked with.  Condolences to his family.

My husband, George Sakel RN at WPH, circulated for Dr. Slater in the O.R. He said that he never forgot Dr. Slater telling him, "you can't trust a man with a beard!" My deepest condolences to Dr. Slater's family who I know he loved so tenderly. As a child clinical psychology doctoral student who did both clinical and research work at West Penn Hospital's Burn Trauma Center in graduate school, Dr. Slater was a great support and mentor. Although that was about 15 years ago, Dr. Slater and I stayed in touch all these years. He was an astute, caring, compassionate, and dedicated man who also never forgot a sense of humor. His mentorship and friendship always will mean so much.

You were one of very few special people in my life and heart, From the first days at Emma Kaufman summer camp to the many evenings, at your home in Pittsburgh, that we spent discussing and sharing our lives. It doesn't seem possible that Harvey is no longer with us. I am saddened to hear of his passing.  He was a man of such depth and compassion; a man of wisdom and a man of contemplation; a man who treasured his family; a friend; a man who loved life.

Wow. What a wonderful life to have lived. He surely left a most positive impact on the many lives he touched. His dedication to helping others and sharing his unique gifts with the world is a legacy to be proud of.

I was so sad to hear of Harvey's passing and send my deepest sympathy to the whole family.  He was a real mensch - hard working, dedicated, intelligent as well as kind and generous. I worked indirectly with Dr. Slater at West Penn Hospital. He was a kind and compassionate man and physician. I will forever be grateful to him for mentoring my daughter as a young nurse in the Burn Unit. He taught her well!
