It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Hediko Iha Gaerlan, a devoted wife, a loving and amazing mother, a remarkable woman, and a compassionate soul. Hediko, at the age of 91, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 8, 2025 in San Jose, CA, surrounded by her loved ones.
Born in 1933 in Okinawa, Japan, Hediko was the beloved daughter of Kamasuke and Kame Iha. She lived with a heart full of love and a spirit that could never be dimmed. Whether it was through her laughter, wisdom, or unwavering support, she touched the lives of so many. She believed in the power of kindness, and even the smallest interactions with her left a lasting impact. In 1950, Hediko met Cornelio Gaerlan at Urasoe-Shi, Okinawa, Japan and went on to be married for 58 years and had eight children together.
The four oldest children were born in Okinawa, Japan, then they moved to the Philippines in 1961, after the fourth child was born. While in the Philippines, the four youngest children were born. Then, in 1978, the family moved to Guam where the children would go to school and Hediko would stay home and take care of the children. For years she gave up her career to be a loving wife and mom. She devoted her time to the family for so many years.
In her early fifties, Hediko decided to go to work. For over 10 years, she thrived working at Hakubotan, a Japanese department store. During her time there, she not only polished her skills but also built lasting friendships.
Hediko was predeceased by Cornelio, Danny, and Randy. She leaves behind Emilie, Lorie, Jimmy, Tommy, Murry, and Brendalee along with 16 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
As we say goodbye, let us carry forward the best parts of Hediko - her kindness, her strength, her love. Let us honor her not just by remembering, but by living in a way that would make her proud. Though we grieve today, we also celebrate a life well lived, a heart well loved, and a soul that will never be forgotten. Rest in peace Mama. You will always be with us.
