Ilija was born on July 20th, 1933, to Ante and Marija Butković in Šehovci, Former Yugoslavia. After attending elementary school, he then went on to study shoemaking at trade school. In around 1945, he began working as a cobbler, and he later opened up his own store where he made and repaired shoes. In 1959, he married Dušanka Butković (née Vragolić), and at the time of his death, the couple had been happily married for nearly 62 years. In 2000, Ilija and his wife immigrated to San Jose, California, where they resided for the last 21 years of his life. One of his favorite things to do was be around the people he loved; whether it be playing chess or drinking beer, Ilija was happiest when with others.
In his 70s, Ilija was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and dementia. Despite his deteriorating health, he remained a warm and lighthearted man, continuing to serve as a bright light for many.
Ilija is survived by his wife, Dušanka; his sisters, Vesna and Lela; his daughter, Drazenka; his son, Mirko, and daughter-in-law, Adisa; his grandchildren, Doris, Andrea, and Sergej; and his grandaughter-in-law, Anushree. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ante and Marija, as well as his sisters, Cvita, Ružica, Janja, and Vida.
Due to COVID-19 related concerns, no funeral or memorial service has been scheduled at this time; however, the family plans on holding a service to celebrate Ilija's life at a later date. Flowers and condolences may be sent to 298 Laurel Grove Lane Apartment 302, San Jose, CA 95126.
