Born on March 20, 1931, in Los Gatos, California, James was the son of Kamekichi and Kasumi Idemoto and the older brother of Robert. His early years in Los Gatos were interrupted by the events of World War II, during which he and his family were interned at the Heart Mountain Relocation Center. After the war, he returned to Los Gatos to rebuild his life and future.
James graduated from Los Gatos High School and went on to attend San Jose State University, where he developed his passion for mechanical engineering. His skills led him to be recruited straight out of college by Litton Industries in San Bruno. He was drafted into the Army and returned back to Litton after his service completed. Later, he made a pivotal career move, joining a group of executives from Litton to help establish Teledyne MEC, where he spent the remainder of his professional career.
After serving in the Army, James married Grace, his wife of 71 years and together they built a loving home in San Jose where they raised their family.
Outside of work, James had a deep passion for automobiles. Whether it was for family, friends, or simply the love of mechanics, he could often be found working on cars in his spare time. After retiring from Teledyne MEC, he and Grace embraced a new adventure—traveling across the country with friends in their recreational vehicles, making cherished memories along the way.
James was a loving and dedicated family man. He is survived by his children, Greg (Linda) Idemoto, Lindsey (Diane) Idemoto, and Kyle Idemoto; his grandchildren, Jimmy (Eula) Idemoto, Alyssa Kholousi (Chris), Evan Idemoto, and Lauren Idemoto; and his great-grandchildren, Kina Kholousi, Kai Kholousi, and Rhys Idemoto.
James lived a life of resilience, dedication, and love. His warmth, wisdom, and generosity will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy lives on through the family he cherished and the countless lives he touched.
A private celebration of James' life was held at Willow Glen Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations can be made to Yu-Ai Kai in his honor.
